Acquire competencies in musculoskeletal ultrasound

Masterclass in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound is an educational programme offered by the Chiropractic Knowledge Hub for over 10 years. The goal of the masterclass is to provide chiropractors with an interest in musculoskeletal ultrasound with the skills to use ultrasound to diagnose conditions in the musculoskeletal system. The course provides the title EFSUMB level 1, which means that one has acquired competencies in musculoskeletal ultrasound and can scan and diagnose the most common problems in the musculoskeletal system.

The aim of the masterclass is to provide participants with the following overall competencies:

• To be able to perform common musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations (shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, hip, ankle/foot, and muscles) systematically, precisely, and safely.
• To know the guidelines for documentation and to be able to describe examination findings.
• To know the normal appearance of musculoskeletal structures and normal findings with ultrasound.
• To be able to diagnose the most common pathological conditions via ultrasound with a particular focus on degenerative and traumatic pathologies.
• To be able to recognise and respond to the need for a second opinion from a colleague or referral to other imaging modalities.

As part of the chiropractors’ agreement, clinics with a practice number can use ultrasound services (2030 and 2031) and receive subsidies through the public health insurance if they have acquired EFSUMB level 1.

WHAT IS EFSUMB?

EFSUMB (Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology) is a European organisation tasked with developing and disseminating knowledge, research, and experience in ultrasound. EFSUMB has published minimum requirements for acquiring EFSUMB level 1 in musculoskeletal ultrasound. The requirements form the framework for what is covered in the masterclass, so that if you complete the masterclass, you will obtain the title.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE MODULES

The modules consist of 6 separate course days, divided into 5 teaching days and a final supervision on the 6th day. The diploma for the masterclass is obtained when all 6 modules have been completed and with a passed final supervision at the end.

The modules will consist of a combination of theory and cases and practical exercises.

The modules can only be taken as one continuous course in a fixed order.

To pass, the participant is expected to perform 200 supervised scans over the 6 teaching sessions and 100 scans in their own clinic. The 100 scans in their own clinic must be described as cases that are registered and supervised in a logbook.

Overall, the entire masterclass will be standardized to 6 ETCS points equivalent to 165 hours. The hours indicate the workload and are relative to the actual workload. The hours are distributed as follows:

• 42 hours - teaching
• 50 hours - ultrasound scanning in their own clinic.

PREREQUISITE

To participate in the Masterclass in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, a participant must have a basic knowledge of ultrasound. It is recommended that participants take DUDS’ course in musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning before starting the masterclass. Similar courses can also be approved after further agreement.

It is a requirement that the participant either has access to an ultrasound scanner in their own practice or acquires this shortly after the start of the masterclass.
